Former coach Alwi Ahmad’s death a great loss to cycling

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 – The death of former national cycling coach Alwi Ahmad, the father of cycling great Rosman Alwi, is a great loss to the sport and the country.

Alwi, 76, who was bed-ridden after suffering a stroke two years ago, died at about 7.15pm yesterday at his house in Taman Datuk Keramat and laid to rest at the Taman Datuk Keramat Muslim Cemetery at noon today.
The late Alwi, who was himself a much feared cyclist in the 1950s, leaves behind wife Norly Noramin and four sons, namely Rosman, Asari, Zaini and Ishak.
Rosman a national cyclist, said the death of his father was a great loss to his family and the country.
“During his heydays, he represented the country in the SEAP Games around the 1970s (now SEA Games) and many local competitions,” he told reporters at his house in Taman Datuk Keramat today.
Rosman added that his father was a strict and focused coach who did not compromise when it came to punctuality.
He added that other national riders who had trained under his father were Daud Ibrahim, Fazlin Saad, Ali Hassan, Nor Effandy Rosli and Haris Fazilah Osman, to name just a few.
Former National Sports Council (NSC) Director-General Datuk Wira Mazlan Ahmad said the late Alwi was a loyal servant to the sport and never expected monetary gains.
“He trained cyclists voluntarily on weekends and even used his own pocket money to buy them food and drinks. Alwi and I were among five people who initiated the formation of the Kuala Lumpur Cycling Association.”
Meanwhile Yayasan Kebajikan Atlet Malaysia (Yakeb), patron Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor also offered her condolence to Alwi’s family while Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, National Sports Institute Director-General Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz and former Sports Commissioner Tan Sri Elyas Omar were among those who paid their last respects. – Bernama
